On January 9, 2025, at around 11:30 AM IST, the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel INSV ‘Tarini’ successfully crossed the International Date Line (IDL). This noteworthy accomplishment represents a turning point in the ship’s current circumnavigation journey around the world, which is being led by two female officers, Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A.
The ship is a component of the Navika Sagar Parikrama II, an expedition that aims to round the world twice by way of the three Great Capes. On October 2, 2024, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of Naval Staff, flagged off INSV ‘Tarini’ from Goa.
On January 6, 2025, the crew left Lyttelton Port in New Zealand and set out on one of the most difficult and drawn-out sections of their voyage, sailing 5,600 nautical miles (about 10,400 km) to Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands.
The crew marked this special point in their journey by resetting their clocks to reflect the change from one calendar day to the next when they crossed the IDL. The passage is commemorated as evidence of their tenacity.
