During a special briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri responded to questions from the media regarding the vandalism of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s home in Dhaka. A statement about the “unfortunate incidents” at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s home has already been issued by the MEA.
India has called the act “regrettable” and denounced the vandalism of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Dhaka home. Because it represents the brave resistance of the Bangladeshi people, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has underlined the significance of this residence to Bangladeshi national consciousness.
Rahman’s home in Dhaka was reportedly vandalized by a mob on Wednesday. After breaking through the gate, the demonstrators, who were allegedly calling for the Awami League to be banned, stormed the building and left extensive damage in their wake. Images revealed that one of the house’s floors was on fire. Social media posts calling for a “Bulldozer Procession” towards the residence if former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave a speech online have connected the protest to her speech.
Additionally, protesters destroyed Hasina’s cousins’ homes in Khulna City and set fire to “Sudha Sadan” in Dhanmondi, the home of her late husband Wajed Mian. In protest, students also took Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s name out of Dhaka University’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina demanded justice after the vandalism, saying that history will exact its retribution and that a building can be destroyed.
