Cautious Progress in China-India Relations During High-Level Discussions

During his recent trip to New Delhi, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong stressed that the relationship between China and India is sustaining a “hard-won momentum of improvement and development.” This announcement came after a meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and a fresh session of the China-India Vice Foreign Minister-Foreign Secretary Dialogue with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Sun emphasized that both nations ought to follow the important agreements made by their leaders at the most recent Kazan meeting. He emphasized the importance of taking a long-term, strategic approach to bilateral ties in order to promote cooperation across a range of domains and build political mutual confidence.

Both sides were asked to work together to promote peace and prosperity on a global and regional level and to appropriately handle conflicts in order to keep relations moving in a stable and positive direction.

A variety of bilateral, global, and regional problems of shared interest were discussed during the open and thorough talks between Sun and Misri. India reaffirmed its backing for China’s Shanghai Cooperation Organization presidency. The two parties also decided to get ready for the right timing of the 24th Special Representatives’ Meeting on the China-India Boundary Question.

In the future, both nations intend to support more people-to-people interactions, resume direct flights and the interchange of resident journalists, and carry out commemoration events for the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Additionally, efforts will be taken to restore the mechanisms for bilateral engagement and guarantee that Indian nationals’ pilgrimages to Mount Gang Rinpoche and Lake Mapam Yun Tso in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region go smoothly.

Sun Weidong also sent condolences to the Indian side for the recent June 12 aviation disaster in Gujarat as a courtesy. With both parties demonstrating a readiness to manage disagreements and advance collaboration for mutual gain, this round of meetings highlights a cautious but noticeable progress in China-Indian relations.
