During their meeting on the fringes of the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni underlined the close and expanding friendship between Italy and India.
The two leaders shook hands and had a quick chat, showcasing their friendship, which has been widely shared on social media and even inspired the popular hashtag #Melodi. India’s friendship with Italy will continue to grow, which would be very beneficial to the people of both countries, PM Modi said, expressing his excitement for the bilateral connection.
Previous encounters, such as selfies taken during the COP28 summit in Dubai and moments during the G20 summit in India, have demonstrated this cordial relationship and highlighted a strong diplomatic relationship centered on cooperation in the fields of industry, energy, and sustainability.
India’s commitment to global cooperation and the priorities of the Global South were highlighted during the meeting, which was part of PM Modi’s packed schedule at the G7 Summit. He also held bilateral talks with leaders from Canada, Japan, Germany, France, the UK, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, Mexico, and other countries.
In addition to being PM Modi’s first visit to Canada in ten years, this summit represented his sixth consecutive G7 participation and a sign of restored engagement with Canada following a period of tense relations. Strengthening India-Canada connections and appointing new high commissioners to resume regular diplomatic duties were among the topics Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed.
With both leaders hopeful about expanding their nations’ cooperation on several fronts in the upcoming years, PM Modi’s meeting with Giorgia Meloni during the G7 Summit reflects a growing alliance between Italy and India, based on respect and common objectives.
