On the fringes of the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi actively participated in a number of high-level bilateral talks with world leaders, reiterating India’s dedication to enhancing international ties and furthering the Global South’s interests.
PM Modi was ceremoniously greeted upon his arrival at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, where he was attending the G7 Summit for the sixth time in a row and his first visit to Canada in ten years.
PM Modi had in-depth conversations with the leaders of Mexico, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, France, and Canada during his diplomatic visits. He met with South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung to discuss strengthening the India-Republic of Korea Special Strategic Partnership, with a focus on trade, green hydrogen, shipbuilding, culture, people-to-people linkages, and crucial and emerging technologies. Additionally, both leaders discussed problems of shared concern on a regional and global level.
PM Modi congratulated Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election win during their first meeting. They also talked about ways to increase collaboration in areas like trade, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, digital innovation, semiconductors, agriculture, and critical minerals. With a common emphasis on the goals of the Global South, the leaders presented their opinions on important regional and global concerns. In addition, PM Modi thanked Mexico for its assistance in India’s war against terrorism and invited President Sheinbaum to visit India.
PM Modi’s meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strengthened the two countries’ close ties while advancing India’s involvement in the Indo-Pacific. He also spoke with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, highlighting the significance of South-South collaboration.
With Prime Minister Mark Carney welcoming PM Modi and emphasizing the importance of India-Canada cooperation, host country Canada played a pivotal role. In keeping with the continuing strategic discussions between France and India, PM Modi also had a pull-aside meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
PM Modi reiterated his commitment to sharing India’s viewpoints on important global issues and promoting the interests of the Global South while highlighting India’s position as a bridge for global progress and cooperation. His involvement in the G7 Summit was a component of a larger official visit involving three countries, which started in Cyprus and will end in Croatia.
India’s aggressive diplomacy, emphasis on fortifying bilateral and multilateral alliances, and commitment to tackling global issues cooperatively while elevating the concerns of developing nations were all demonstrated by PM Modi’s engagements at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis.
