Integrated Spanish 120mm Alakran mortar and Mahindra’s ALSV

MADISON — Indian consumers are the target market for the Spanish company Everis Aerospace and Defense. The ALSV chassis has been modified to accommodate this company’s 120 mm Alakran mortar system. ALSV, or Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle, is manufactured by Mahindra in India.

The Indian Army, which has ordered 1,300 units from Mahindra, is currently producing the ALSV. The mortar-mounted variant has two doors and a protected cabin. On the back platform is where the Alakran mortar is situated. This mortar can be fitted into the back of heavier armoured vehicles or light four-wheel drive vehicles.

Last year, the ALSV with Alakran was on display at an Indian defence expo. The purchase of this system by the Asian nation has not yet received official confirmation.

System Specifications

When a 120mm mortar fires with seven chargers—which would have a maximum range of over 8,000 meters—the recoil will be comparable to a mass of 3.600 kg falling from a height of five metres. Due to the size of the force, a heavy vehicle and a recoil absorber system are needed to manage the enormous amount of energy. Until NTGS, a subsidiary of the Everis Aerospace and Defence Group, developed the Alakran, this was the industry’s standard approach.

Alakran’s innovative technology addresses the operational issues that currently plague mortar carriers, such as overload, vehicle reinforcement, large platforms, overheating, and restricted firing range.

Alakran is simple to use and maintains the effectiveness and efficiency of the conventional mortar tube because it doesn’t use a recoil absorber system. Similar to that, its electromechanical aiming system operates with high speed and accuracy.

With its cutting-edge technology, Alakran addresses the operational problems that mortar carriers currently face, including ov

erload, vehicle reinforcement, large platforms, overheating, and a constrained firing range.

Alakran doesn’t use a recoil absorber system, making it easy to use while maintaining the conventional mortar tube’s effectiveness and efficiency. Its electromechanical aiming system performs in a similarly quick and precise manner.

The system’s basic configuration consists of a three-person crew, up to 60 120 mm mortar charges, and related parts. Additionally, it has flat-screen computerised shot control equipment. The Alakran mortar’s HE grenades have a claimed maximum range of 7,180 metres. Also created by Ukrainian industry is a 120 mm laser-guided mortar shell. With a high-explosive warhead and a marginally longer range of 7,500 metres, ir is equipped. Ukroboronservice published a video of tests with 12 of these systems in the middle of 2019.

The most recent versions also incorporate an automatic targeting system that combines target identification components with a GIS (Geographic Information System) and an open BMS (Battle Management System) for use by various Alakran units. Additionally, the system permits mounting a mortar with a smaller calibre. Operational Speed

In just 35 seconds, the vehicle is ready to fire, and eight seconds after firing, it is back on target. It takes 25 seconds to retract. A proprietary fire control system that displays its location and that of assigned targets and includes a ballistic calculation system for various types of ammunition allows for operation from the cockpit and from outside the vehicle. From 6.5 km with 81 mm to 8 km with 120 mm, the range varies.
