According to the Chinese Foreign Minister, China and India should pledge to mutual understanding.

In a meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi underlined the need of improving understanding and collaboration between China and India. Following difficulties that have marked their encounters in recent years, this meeting, which took place on January 27, 2025, is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to repair relations between the two countries.

Both countries should “avoid mutual suspicion, mutual estrangement, and mutual exhaustion,” according to Wang Yi. In order to align their relations with their respective core interests and promote regional stability in Asia and beyond, he urged the two nations to look into additional significant measures that would promote understanding and support.

During the discussions, Misri highlighted India’s willingness to work collaboratively with China to celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations and support China’s leadership role in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He noted that both nations have engaged in productive dialogues to manage differences and promote practical cooperation across various sectors.

The backdrop of this meeting is significant as it follows a period of heightened tensions along their shared border, particularly after the violent clashes in Galwan Valley in 2020. Since then, both countries have made strides towards military disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which has allowed for a more conducive environment for diplomatic dialogue.

At a time when global geopolitical forces are changing, especially with Donald Trump expected to return to the U.S. presidency, Wang’s demand for greater engagement might have an impact on India-China relations as both nations negotiate their stances in the face of U.S.-China tensions.

With an emphasis on reciprocal advantages and regional peace, this conference represents a significant milestone in the continuous attempts to mend and improve India-China relations.
