Taipei: Following President Tsai Ing-Wen’s return from a trip to the US where she met House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, China is preparing to begin a three-day military exercise around Taiwan, according to Taiwan News.

The statement was delivered after Tsai’s return from a trip to the US, which concluded in a meeting with McCarthy and other representatives of both political parties in Los Angeles.

According to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command would undertake a “combat readiness patrol” and a “unified sword” exercise in the Taiwan Strait and the airspace to Taiwan’s north, south, and east. Taiwan News reported this. (MOD).

The drills will start on Saturday, April 8, according to China. The statement claims that the drill was “planned”.

The Fujian Maritime Safety Administration additionally declared on Friday (April 7) that it will conduct a “live rounds” training near Luoyuan Wan on April 11, 13, 15, and 20 in addition to the ministry of defence exercise.

On April 10, there will also be a live rounds drill close to Pingtan, according to the statement.

On Wednesday (local time), Tsai Ing-Wen, the president of Taiwan, met McCarthy, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, in California. This was the first time the president of Taiwan and the speaker of the US House had a meeting on American soil.

After her SUV arrived at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles, both presidents exchanged brief handshakes.

China has consistently expressed objection to the two leaders’ meeting and has expressed its strong disapproval of it.

China sent out six maritime ships to the area along the coast of Taiwan before their meeting. According to China’s Fujian Province, Beijing dispatched a “large scale patrol and rescue vessel” on Wednesday evening local time for a three-day “joint patrol and inspection” operation in the central and northern Taiwan Strait.

Although the Chinese Communist Party has never held power in Taiwan, Beijing contends that Taiwan is a part of its territory and is pursuing “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan.

After Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, visited Taiwan in August of last year, tensions between China and Taiwan grew. China, which claims Taiwan as part of its sovereignty, objected to Pelosi’s visit there.

During Pelosi’s visit to the island, China announced military exercises in the area.
