In response to reports of terrorists fighting in the jungles close to the Indo-Pakistan border, a significant anti-terror operation was launched on March 23, 2025, in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Following information of insurgent activity in Sanyal village, near the Hiranagar sector, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, working with troops from the Rising Star Corps, initiated the operation.
Security personnel discovered a gang of insurgents hiding in the thick forest during the combing operation. There was a gunfight as the militants opened fire as they tried to set up a multi-tiered cordon around the place.
Police were unable to quickly confirm any casualties, although preliminary reports suggested that a girl was injured during the gunfight. Additionally, there were unconfirmed allegations that suggested extremists might have tried to kidnap bystanders during the incident.
With heightened insurgent activity over the past year, especially with organisations entering the Jammu region from Pakistan, the situation in Kathua has been difficult.
In reaction to this most recent incident, J&K Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat travelled to the region to evaluate operations strategies and make sure that efficient steps were being done to find the militants who were hiding.
As operations proceeded under increased border vigilance because of persistent terrorist infiltration concerns, reinforcements were sent in to support security measures.
