The Arjun MK-1A, according to AVNL, has been designed and produced locally and incorporates many upgrades over the Arjun Mk-1 MBT, which is currently in use by the Indian Army.

According to AVNL, the Arjun MK-1A has a competitive advantage over other current battle tanks thanks to the modern technologies installed on it. According to AVNL, the new MBT is equipped with a computer-controlled integrated fire-control system that includes a stabilised “day-and-night” sighting system. This technology ensures a “very high first round hit probability” and shortens the reaction time needed to engage targets.

A commander’s panoramic sight, an MK-Il automatic target tracker, a remotely operated weapon station, and a muzzle reference system were also added by AVNL to the Arjun MK-1A to increase firepower.

Because of its “mobility characteristics that have proven [their] worth while operating in highly demanding Indian desert conditions,” according to AVNL, the Arjun MK-1A is known as a “desert Ferrari.”

According to AVNL, the MK-1A boasts a high power-to-weight ratio, a high-performance power pack, and a “robust” gearbox system that contributes to enhancing its mobility.

An enhanced running gear system, a new final drive unit with a higher reduction ratio, a new track system, a driver’s night-sight system, and an advanced land navigation system are additional technologies added to the Mk-1A.

A brand-new design that entered production in 2021 is the Arjun MK-1A. Even if the differences between the two tank types are minimal, they do exist if we compare them based on their fundamental traits. MK-1A weighs more than 9 tonnes more than MK-1. As a result, top speed is decreased. While MK-1A travels at 58 km/h, MK-1 moves at 70 km/h.

The tank’s turret is one of the key distinctions. The MK-1A has an integrated remotely controlled turret and 16 smoke grenades instead of the MK-1’s 12. Returning to the turret, the MK1A has upgraded ERA and Kanchan armour, while the MK-1 keeps using composite modular armour. The company claims that the MK-1 may eventually get better armour as well.

The MK-1A contains a few significant integrations made by the Indian manufacturer. These include the automatic target tracking system (ATS) integrated into the gunner’s main sight, the NERA for protection, and the commander’s panoramic sight (CPS MK-II). With the addition of a laser rangefinder and a thermal imaging sight, the tank’s daylight sights have been doubled. As you can see, the command centre of the tank has received substantial attention. Although the tank’s top speed is lower than that of its forerunner, the manufacturer has made changes that significantly increase the Arjun MK-1A’s security and mobility on treacherous terrain. This is made possible by a brand-new auxiliary power unit. It is twice as powerful as the MK1, claims HVF. A newly created hydropneumatic suspension system gives the undercarriage a new system.

Last but not least, a significant portion of the upgrades were completed using local resources. i.e., India keeps developing and working on the Made in India programme.

The 120mm main cannon on the Arjun tank has occasionally malfunctioned. New Delhi has spent money on research and development over the years to assure the efficacy of the 120mm gun. These investments appear to have been profitable. For instance, the Arjun tank’s 120mm gun was put to the test by launching an ATGM in August of this year. The testing were successful, increasing the cannon’s lethality.

India plans to export the Arjun MK-1A tank in addition to arming itself with the tank. Bahrain provided the first indications that the Indian tank was generating interest. This took place when the two governments started talking in March.

Arjun may out to be considerably more important to India today than was initially anticipated when New Delhi purchased T-90 tanks and spent most of its money on Russian inventions. Arjun is currently at the centre of India’s most recent launch programme, which is the creation of an unmanned ground vehicle. India announced these plans in April of this year, emphasising specifically that the Arjun MK-1 will be the project’s central component.
