AS THE NEW INDIAN ENVOY TO SAUDI ARABIA, SUHEL AJAZ KHAN ASSUMES CHARGE

Suhel Ajaz Khan, India’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, took up his new post on Monday.

After presenting his credentials at the Saudi foreign affairs ministry, where he was met by the ministry’s Chief of Protocol, the ambassador began his day at the Indian Embassy here by unfurling the national flag, according to the Indian Embassy.

He also paid floral homage to Mahatma Gandhi’s statue.

“Ambassador H.E. Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan @SuhelAKhanIFS assumed the charge in the Embassy today. He commenced his first day by unfurling the tricolour,” read a tweet by the Embassy of India in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, @IndianEmbRiyadh.

Earlier on Monday, the Ambassador presented a copy of his credentials to the Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to begin his mission in Saudi Arabia.

Dr Khan, a 1997-batch Indian Foreign Service officer was the Indian Ambassador to Lebanon.

“Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan (IFS: 1997), presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Lebanon has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the MEA said in a statement in December.

According to the MEA, his first abroad assignment was to the Embassy of India in Cairo, where he acquired an Advanced Diploma in Arabic Language from the American University in Cairo between 1999 and 2001.

Between 2002 to 2005, he worked at the Indian Embassy in Damascus, handling Administration, Press, and Political Affairs. Between 2005 to 2008, he served as Consul in the Consulate General of India in Jeddah, where he handled a variety of issues, including Haj concerns and Haj arrangements for Indian pilgrims.

Suhel Khan later worked as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs’ WANA (West Asia North Africa) Division from 2008 to 2009, followed by a term at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad from 2009 to 2011, where he handled Visa and Consular matters.

Khan worked as a Director in the office of Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed from 2011 to 2013.

Khan was a member of the United Nations Pension Board in 2016 and 2017. Between September 2017 to June 2019, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, with the personal rank of Ambassador.
