At the G7 summit in Canada, PM Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledge to strengthen their strategic partnership.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met for the first time since Merz took office in May 2025 during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. This high-level interaction highlighted the ongoing strength of bilateral ties and took place in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.

In their conversations, Prime Minister Modi thanked the German government for its sympathies after the unfortunate Ahmedabad plane disaster and congratulated Chancellor Merz on his recent political success.

In crucial areas like counterterrorism and fighting the funding of terrorism, both leaders underlined their commitment to stepping up collaboration. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of continued collaboration, stating that India and Germany would keep working together to address these global challenges.

The summit also covered a wide range of bilateral cooperation topics, including as innovation, technology, education, mobility, green and sustainable development, trade and investment, and defense and security. Both leaders emphasized how important it is to deepen and broaden their strategic alliance, especially in cutting-edge fields like research and innovation, manufacturing, semiconductors, IT, and sustainability.

Chancellor Merz was congratulated by Prime Minister Modi for Germany’s unwavering solidarity and support of India in the war against terror. As part of their continued engagement, both leaders committed to strengthen defense and security ties, acknowledging that terrorism continues to pose a serious danger to world peace and stability.

Modi and Merz discussed bilateral matters as well as significant regional and global events, demonstrating their mutual dedication to working closely together to address global issues. In an effort to further the strong ties between the two countries, Prime Minister Modi invited Chancellor Merz to come to India at a time that would work for both of them.

With both parties expressing satisfaction at the progress made and their shared resolve to advance collaboration across priority areas as the strategic partnership enters its 25th year, the meeting was largely regarded as a reaffirmation of the continued momentum in India-Germany relations.
