‘Bomb Scare’ Sends American Airlines Flight From Delhi to Rome

Due to a reported bomb threat, American Airlines flight AA292, which was en route from JFK International Airport in New York to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, was rerouted to Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in Rome.

After receiving the threat while flying over the Caspian Sea, close to Turkmenistan, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which was carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, had to make an emergency landing in Rome.

After entering Italian airspace, two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from the Italian Air Force escorted the flight as a precaution.

The email threat was later determined to be baseless.

For almost fifteen hours, the plane was grounded for security inspections. Before being cleared, the aircraft was thoroughly inspected and passengers were vetted.

Once all inspections were good, the flight was supposed to proceed to New Delhi when the security checks were finished.

The event serves as a reminder of the strict security measures put in place to deal with possible dangers while flying. The flight made a safe landing in spite of the alarm, and airport operations in Rome went on as usual.
