China and India Discuss the LAC Situation and Agree to Resume Cross-Border Cooperation Immediately

The Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) met for the 33rd time on March 25, 2025, in Beijing.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the meeting was “positive and constructive,” with a focus on assessing the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and discussing early cross-border cooperation, including trans-border river management and the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra.

Hong Liang, Director General of Boundary and Oceanic Affairs, represented China, while Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary for East Asia, led the Indian mission. Both sides looked at several ways to put decisions from a prior Special Representatives meeting in December 2024 that focused on improving efficient border administration into practice.

In order to preserve peace and tranquilly along the border, which is thought to be crucial for enhancing bilateral relations generally, they decided to bolster diplomatic and military measures.

Significant preparations for the upcoming Special Representatives meeting, which is slated to take place in India later this year, were also facilitated by the conference. In the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has voiced hope for bettering ties with China, stressing the value of mutual learning and rebuilding trust damaged by tensions since 2020.

He pointed out that since the two countries have long-standing cultural ties, they ought to compete constructively rather than fight.

Following a time of increased military tensions in border regions, the talks represent continued efforts by both nations to restore normalcy to their relations. The MEA reaffirmed that maintaining a good bilateral relationship going ahead depends on peace along the LAC.
