Drone-Powered Telesurgery Will Revolutionize Battlefield Trauma Care for Wounded Soldiers: SSI’s Project Vimana

Project Vimana, a revolutionary drone-mounted robotic technology designed for remote telesurgery on injured soldiers in combat environments, was launched by Gurugram-based SS Innovations (SSI). The 3rd Global Multi-Specialty Robotic Surgery Conference (SMRSC) 2026 was where the system debuted. It focuses on stabilizing critically injured persons in isolated, difficult-to-reach locations when prompt medical evacuation is not feasible.

The main platform of Project Vimana is a heavy-lift autonomous drone. This drone has two small robotic arms with seven degrees of freedom and high-definition cameras for accurate visual feedback.

These robotic arms are controlled remotely by trauma surgeons from a secure command center. They can perform vital tasks including wound treatment, shrapnel extraction, chest decompression, and hemorrhage control thanks to this system.

Project Vimana’s main objective is to bridge the crucial “golden hour”—the crucial period in high-risk combat conditions between the occurrence of injuries and medical evacuation. It seeks to significantly increase survival rates by providing prompt intervention.

The project is still in the proof-of-concept phase right now. Before full deployment, developers estimate that extensive testing and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals will take about 1.5 years.

Dr. Sudhir Srivastava is in charge of SS Innovations. The business is concurrently pursuing complementary projects to support the healthcare and defense industries.

Project Operion, a mobile operating room ecosystem intended for quick deployment, is one of these. It turns conventional medical facilities into adaptable, mission-ready resources.

SSI is also working on a humanoid robot called SSI Avtara. Numerous roles in defense operations and more general healthcare applications are supported by this adaptable platform.
