Following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk during Modi’s recent visit to the United States, Tesla has formally started hiring in India, indicating its planned entry into the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. Targeting a variety of back-end and customer-facing roles, the company has listed 13 job openings on LinkedIn, with positions available in Delhi and Mumbai.
Both Delhi and Mumbai had at least five open positions, including service technician and other advisory positions.
Service technicians, customer service representatives, delivery operations specialists, and a number of advisory positions are among the roles. In particular, five positions are open in both Delhi and Mumbai, with the majority of the remaining positions based in Mumbai.
India lowered its basic customs duty on luxury electric vehicles costing more than $40,000 from 110% to 70%, which made it easier for Tesla to enter the market. This cut allays earlier worries about high import taxes that caused Tesla’s plans to be delayed.
Following conversations between Musk and Modi on trade and investment prospects, the hiring announcement was made. Speculation regarding potential future cooperation between Tesla and the Indian government has been stoked by this meeting.
In light of declining sales in other regions, Tesla has a significant opportunity to enter the Indian market. Even though it is still in its infancy in comparison to China, India’s EV market is expanding quickly; last year, sales approached 100,000 units. This expansion is especially alluring as Tesla looks to offsetreducing sales worldwide.
As it gets ready to enter one of the biggest auto markets in the world, this hiring campaign is a crucial step for Tesla.
