In Beijing, NSA Ajit Doval meets with Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister.

On June 23, 2025, in Beijing, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met with Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo and Chinese Foreign Minister, during the 20th Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Security Council Secretaries.

As both parties discussed recent advances in India-China bilateral relations and reaffirmed the significance of furthering the overall growth of ties, including creating more people-to-people links, the meeting represented a significant diplomatic engagement.

In order to preserve peace and stability in the area, NSA Doval emphasized throughout the talks the importance of combating terrorism in all of its forms and manifestations. This message is thought to be especially pertinent in light of recent cross-border terrorist attacks and military conflicts in South Asia. China received an oblique message about its close connections with Pakistan from this demand for counterterrorism cooperation, particularly in light of India’s military response to the May 2025 Pahalgam terror assault.

Sensitive subjects including the current border situation, regional security, and international crises like those in Iran and Ukraine were among the many bilateral, regional, and global concerns of mutual interest on which the two sides shared their opinions. Wang Yi emphasized that both nations must manage delicate matters properly and preserve peace and quiet along the border areas, while also acknowledging the beneficial developments in bilateral relations.

Doval signaled his continued commitment to high-level communication and conflict resolution by announcing his intention to host Wang Yi in India for the 24th session of the Special Representative Talks at a time that works for both parties.

Regarding the economy, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal emphasized that India is actively negotiating both diplomatically and commercially with China to guarantee the supply of vital rare earth minerals, which are vital for the automobile industry and other sectors. In order to resolve supply chain issues and preserve predictability in trade with China, the Indian government is also working with trade associations like SIAM and ACMA.

The efforts to normalize India-China ties after the 2020 military stalemate in eastern Ladakh and the ensuing disengagement agreements serve as the context for this summit. Additionally, it coincides with important SCO summits and meetings, where more high-level exchanges between Chinese and Indian leaders are expected.
