In Chattogram, Bangladesh, demonstrators hold a sit-in outside the Indian Assistant High Commission.

Following the passing of Inqilab Moncho convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi, protesters held a sit-in protest at the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chattogram, Bangladesh.

According to BD News and ANI on December 19, 2025, the event happened late on Thursday night.

Around 11 p.m., the protesters assembled in the port city’s Khulshi neighborhood. They took up positions right in front of the mission’s office and used chants to express their complaints.

The confrontation grew more intense when a second group of demonstrators simultaneously took over Gate No. 2 close to the property. When police learned of the assembly, they acted quickly.

Slogans denouncing Hadi’s murder were yelled by the audience, who connected them to more general complaints. Tensions outside the diplomatic outpost increased as a result of these, which included direct anti-Indian sentiments and anti-Awami League language.

The demonstrators were quickly pushed back from the high commission’s limits by law enforcement officials. Shahin Alam, the chief of Khulshi Police, told BD News that the protesters had been dispersed.

After the dispersion, police kept a close eye on the area to protect public order. In the immediate aftermath, no injuries or arrests were recorded.

During Bangladesh’s July Uprising, Sharif Osman bin Hadi rose to prominence. He established himself as an outspoken opponent of the system and was instrumental in the campaign to outlaw the Awami League.

Hadi has declared that he would run as an independent from the Dhaka-8 constituency in the parliamentary election. In the midst of growing political unrest, his campaign actions put him in the public eye.

Last Friday, as Hadi was campaigning in Bijoynagar, Dhaka, there was a deadly incident. Hadi was riding in a rickshaw when he was shot by an attacker who was mounted on a moving motorcycle.

Hadi was seriously injured when the bullet hit him in the head. At Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he was treated right away and underwent surgeryHadi was moved to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka for additional treatment that same evening. Advanced intervention was necessary since his health remained serious.

Hadi was taken to Singapore General Hospital on Monday afternoon by air ambulance for specialized care. On Thursday night, neurosurgeon Abdul Ahad, who took part in the first surgery in Dhaka, confirmed the death through a video message.

On its Facebook site, Inqilab Moncho posted a message lamenting Hadi as a “martyr.” By framing his death as part of a purported “struggle against Indian hegemony,” the organization fueled the Chattogram demonstrations.

Protesters’ anti-Indian feelings have been heightened by this narrative, which attributes Hadi’s murder to alleged outside meddling. Simmering bilateral tensions are highlighted by the sit-in outside the Indian Assistant High Commission.

As of early Friday, no further events have been reported, but Bangladeshi authorities are still keeping an eye on the situation in Khulshi. The incident serves as a reminder of the continued political unrest that followed the July Uprising and election preparations.

Tensions in the region have occasionally led to protests against Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh. To stop the situation from getting worse, authorities in Chattogram and Dhaka give security around these locations top priority.
