India presents the Maldives’ national defense force with 72 vehicles.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has received 72 vehicles from India, marking a major increase in the two nations’ defense relations.

During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official state visit to the Maldives on July 25, 2025, the fleet was ceremoniously turned over at the President’s Office in Malé.

In a ceremony that highlighted the growing bilateral ties, Prime Minister Modi gave President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu the symbolic key for the vehicles.

This car donation is the result of a formal commitment to strengthening defense relations made earlier this year by Maldives Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon and Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

A range of operational and utility vehicles are part of the given consignment, which is intended to improve the MNDF’s logistical and operational readiness.

India’s action demonstrates its strategic cooperation and dedication to Maldivian capacity-building and regional security. Both countries’ officials were certain that this project will improve the Maldives’ defense readiness and have a favorable impact on regional security dynamics.

During PM Modi’s visit, the donation was a part of a larger range of collaborative efforts that also included major financial support through lines of credit and other aid packages, as well as assistance with infrastructure development.

Given the geopolitical environment of the Indian Ocean region, this development underscores the restored and stronger connection between India and the Maldives under the current governments, which is shifting towards more substantial defense, economic, and strategic cooperation.
