Japan’s Engagement To Promote Economic Growth And Strengthen Tech Capabilities: Assam CM

A major turning point in Assam’s attempts to draw in Japanese investment and promote bilateral cooperation was reached recently when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Speaker of the Japanese House of Representatives Nukaga Fukushiro and his high-level delegation to the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility, which is currently under construction in Jagiroad.

The fact that this is the fourth time in a short period of time that a Japanese team has visited Assam highlights the expanding strategic connection between Assam and Japan, especially in the areas of infrastructure and technology.

The TATA Semiconductor facility, India’s first domestic semiconductor assembly and testing plant, was visited by the Japanese team. It is anticipated that the project, which would cost about ₹27,000 crore, will change the industrial landscape of Assam and the larger Northeast.

The facility will concentrate on cutting-edge technologies including wire bond, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging with the goal of meeting demand worldwide in industries like consumer electronics, industrial, and artificial intelligence. By mid-2025, the first phase should be operational, creating over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs and offering substantial work prospects to young people in the area.

In addition to stressing that Japanese participation will greatly improve Assam’s technological capabilities, fortify supply network

s, and spur economic growth, Chief Minister Sarma cited Japan’s longtime leadership in semiconductor technology. He noted that Japan has already lifted all travel restrictions for tourists visiting Assam and is actively supporting the state in key sectors such as health and infrastructureAlong with tours of other important locations, such as the future Japan-assisted skill training center and IIT-Guwahati, where the delegation examined research facilities and ongoing nanotechnology projects, the visit also included talks on ongoing engagement between Japanese institutions and the Assam government.

As evidenced by recent events like the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit and the state’s desire to build a specific industrial park for Japanese businesses, these measures are a part of Assam’s larger aim to create a strong semiconductor ecosystem and draw in international investmentJapan’s growing engagement in Assam’s semiconductor industry has the potential to usher in a new era of cooperation between the two countries by greatly bolstering the state’s technological infrastructure, generating jobs, and promoting economic progress.
