Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, arrived at Goa’s Dabolim airport on Thursday morning to participate in the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference that starts today in the coastal State.

Later today, Lavrov and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar are expected to hold a bilateral meeting. Lavrov was accompanied by a delegation.

Those in attendance at this meeting in person include the foreign ministers of China and Pakistan. The ministers will talk on a number of significant geopolitical topics, including regional security and economic collaboration between SCO members.

Lavrov is scheduled to meet with his counterparts from other SCO nations in a number of bilateral sessions.

Lavrov is making his second trip to India this year. In March, he had previously gone to the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi.

For its counterparts from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, India will also organize a cultural event and dinner this evening.

The SCO meeting of foreign ministers on Friday is significant because it comes at a time when tensions between Russia and Ukraine are rising, particularly in the wake of an alleged assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia has blamed on Ukrainians.

‘Secure-SCO’ is the focus of India’s SCO Chairmanship in 2023. India places a high value on the SCO’s role in fostering regional multilateralism in politics, security, trade, and human relations.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is a multinational group that was founded in 2001.

Prior to the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting, the SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting was held in New Delhi in April. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu attended and spoke with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh about the Russian defense industry’s participation in the ‘Make in India’ initiative and ways to give it more momentum.

The two sides also spoke about a range of issues pertaining to their bilateral defense cooperation, such as business partnerships and relationships between the armed forces.

The continued relationship with the SCO has aided India in improving ties with the nations in the area, which is regarded as India’s extended neighborhood and with which it shares civilizational ties.
