PM Modi Arrives at the G7 Summit at Kananaskis Lodge

On June 17, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge in Alberta, Canada, to attend the G7 Summit. This was his sixth straight G7 Summit attendance and his first trip to Canada in ten years.

Following a time of tense relations between India and Canada, he was welcomed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, suggesting a possible change in the two countries’ relationship. India’s acting High Commissioner, Chinmoy Naik, welcomed Modi ceremoniously at the Calgary airport upon his arrival.

PM Modi underlined India’s dedication to bringing attention to the Global South’s objectives and participating in important international discussions during his tour. He stated in his statement that he plans to meet with a number of international leaders to exchange viewpoints on urgent issues like energy security, technology, and innovation, with an emphasis on the nexus between energy and artificial intelligence as well as quantum technologies.

In order to guarantee accessibility and affordability in a world that is changing quickly, the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that Modi would take part in G7 talks focused on the future of energy security, diversification, technology, infrastructure, and investment.

Modi had twelve meetings in ten hours during the summit, which was an exceptionally busy schedule. French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, South Korean Prime Minister Lee Jae-myung, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz were among the leaders he met with one-on-one. These gatherings included a wide range of topics, including technology, green hydrogen, people-to-people interactions, trade, and counterterrorism. Modi also took part in the traditional group photo with other world leaders, signifying India’s continued involvement with the G7 even though it is not an official member.

Following India’s Operation Sindoor, which targeted militant infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror strikes, the summit is taking place against a backdrop of international tensions, including wars in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In addition to being important for multilateral diplomacy, Modi’s visit is also considered as having the ability to mend India-Canada ties, especially in light of the diplomatic rift caused by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In a complex international setting, PM Modi’s attendance at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis highlights India’s active engagement in international fora, its emphasis on energy security and technological innovation, and its renewed commitment to fortifying connections with Canada and other major economies.
