On January 26, 2025, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will travel to India as the Chief Guest for the 76th Republic Day festivities. Prabowo’s first official visit to India since taking office in October 2024 will take place from January 25 to 26.
Given that the visit takes place on the 75th anniversary of India and Indonesia’s official ties, it is noteworthy. Both countries are acknowledged as Comprehensive Strategic Partners and have a long history of “warm and friendly ties” together. India’s Act East Policy and its Indo-Pacific regional vision heavily rely on Indonesia.
President Prabowo is anticipated to hold talks with Indian authorities during his state visit in order to thoroughly examine bilateral relations and discuss regional and international problems of shared interest. This involves collaboration in a number of domains, including strategic, cultural, and economic ones.
The fact that Prabowo’s original itinerary called for him to visit Pakistan after India but was changed in response to New Delhi’s concerns makes his visit noteworthy as well. This change reflects India’s strategic objectives in upholding its diplomatic position in the area.
The trip comes after President Prabowo and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met recently at the G20 Summit, when they both reiterated their commitment to enhancing their bilateral ties.
