Usha Reddi, the head of the Indian American Democratic Party, has been sworn in as a state senator in Kansas, the United States. Usha Reddi will represent District 22 in the midwestern state of Illinois.

“This afternoon, I was sworn in as State Senator for District 22. It was wonderful to have my family around me today. I am excited to represent you. Yours in government service, “Reddi took to Twitter.

Reddi took over for Manhattan Senator Tom Hawk, who announced his retirement from the Legislature in December, according to KSN television station.

“It’s been a thrilling night. I am honoured to serve as Senator for Senate District 22 “KSN-TV cited Reddi as saying. “Senator Tom Hawk is an exceptional leader, and I’m sure I’ll be contacting him on a regular basis.”

According to the US publication, Reddi has been a member of the Manhattan City Commission since 2013, serving twice as mayor.

Previously, the Indian American politician worked as a teacher in Manhattan-Ogden public schools, where she was President of their National Education Association chapter.

Reddi is a psychology and elementary education graduate. She also holds a Master’s degree in educational leadership from Kansas State University.

“Many of us have known Usha as a community leader for years now, and we look forward to welcoming her as a legislative colleague next week,” said Senate Democratic Leader Dinah Sykes, as quoted by KSN-TV.

“We’re grateful she’s stepped up to represent the Manhattan community in this new capacity, and I’m excited to use her abilities in the Legislature to help move Kansas forward,” Sykes said.
