On February 1, 2025, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will commemorate its 49th Raising Day. This yearly celebration honors the ICG’s official founding on February 1, 1977, as a result of the Coast Guard Act of 1978. The purpose of the day is to recognize the commitment and hard work of Coast Guard members in defending India’s maritime interests.
Along India’s vast 7,516-kilometer coastline, the Indian Coast Guard is essential to maintaining marine safety and security. Its duties include safeguarding the marine environment, enforcing maritime law, and conducting search and rescue missions.
From its original fleet of only seven surface platforms, the ICG has undergone substantial evolution since its founding to become a powerful force.
The ICG’s motto, “Vayam Rakshamah” (We Protect), sums up its dedication to protecting India’s maritime areas and guaranteeing the security of fishermen and sailors.
Numerous activities are scheduled for this unique day in the various Coast Guard operating locations. Usually, these festivities consist of:
parades and exhibits that highlight the Coast Guard’s capabilities.
events to honor staff members who have shown extraordinary bravery and service.
initiatives to inform the public about maritime safety and the Coast Guard’s contribution to national security through community outreach.
The ICG is still adjusting to new maritime security issues as it gets closer to its 50th anniversary in 2027. Through domestic projects under the “Make in India” initiative, it will be able to enhance its operational capacities and improve its technological infrastructure.
