US Vice President JD Vance and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz are expected to visit India later this month, marking significant diplomatic engagements between the two nations. The visits, likely to occur between April 21 and 25, coincide with ongoing efforts to finalise a bilateral trade agreement between India and the US.
This trade pact has been a major topic of conversation ever since US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in February and decided to aim for $500 billion in bilateral commerce by 2030, with the goal of completing the first phase of the agreement by the end of the year.
Along with private excursions to Jaipur and Agra, Vice President JD Vance’s tour will include formal discussions with Prime Minister Modi and other high-ranking officials. His wife, Usha Vance, who is travelling to India for the first time as the Second Lady and whose parents are Indian, will accompany him.
Given his prior positions on tariffs, Vance’s trip is viewed as a chance to deepen relationships and maybe remove obstacles in trade talks.
The TRUST (Transforming the Relationship Utilising Strategic Technology) initiative, a rebranded version of the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), is the focal point of NSA Mike Waltz’s visit.
Waltz is anticipated to meet with NSA Ajit Doval, his Indian counterpart, to talk about potential future cooperation in important technology fields. He is expected to meet Prime Minister Modi and take part in a closed-door India-US Forum, however the timing may be difficult because of Modi’s planned trip to Saudi Arabia on April 22–23.
Both Vance and Waltz are expected to engage in formal and Track-II dialogues in Delhi, aimed at deepening India-US relations. Their visits follow a recent trip by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and precede anticipated visits by other high-ranking US officials, including Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth and potentially President Donald Trump for the Quad summit.
These engagements highlight the growing strategic partnership between India and the US, focusing on trade, defence, and technology cooperation.
