AS ‘AUTHORITARIAN REGIME’ IS DOWNGRADED TO PAKISTAN, AUSTRALIA RECORDS GREATEST DETERIORATION IN ASIA: REPORT

As per the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Democracy Index 2023 study, Pakistan is the only country in Asia to be demoted to a “authoritarian regime”, marking the biggest decline of any country in the region classed as “Australia and Asia”.

According to a report cited by Geo News, it has been categorised from a “hybrid regime” to a “authoritarian regime.”

An overview of 165 independent states and two territories’ democratic conditions may be found in the EIU Democracy Index.

Only eight of the 28 countries in the region that are included in the index saw an improvement in their score, while 15 saw a fall.

Notably, Pakistan dropped 11 spots in the EIU Democracy Index, with its score dropping from 0.88 to 3.25.
