Al Jazeera said on Friday that Alexei Navalny, the leader of the Russian opposition, had passed away in prison, citing official media.

State media announced the 47-year-old Russian opposition leader’s death and referenced the Yamalo-Nenets region’s prison system, where he was serving his term.

According to a statement released by the Yamalo-Nenets region’s jail service, which Al Jazeera published, Navalny “felt bad” after going for a stroll and “almost immediately” lost consciousness.

Medical personnel showed up right away, and an ambulance squad was dispatched. There were resuscitation attempts made, however they were unsuccessful. Paramedics affirmed the prisoner’s passing. The jail statement stated, “The causes of death are being determined.”
