China and India Put a Lot of Work Into Safeguarding the G20, Says Jaishankar

In a recent bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on February 21, 2025, in Johannesburg, South Africa, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the joint efforts of China and India to protect the integrity of the G20.

Jaishankar stressed that both countries had worked hard to maintain the G20 as an institution in the face of a “polarized global situation” at this meeting, which took place on the margins of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Even during difficult times in their bilateral relations, Jaishankar noted that forums such as the G20 offer crucial chances for communication between China and India.

He said that since their last meeting in November 2024, India’s Foreign Secretary and National Security Adviser had visited China, marking important diplomatic engagements during the recent thaw in ties.

Numerous topics were discussed at the talks, including preserving harmony along their shared border, assisting with the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, and strengthening collaboration on cross-border trade and rivers.

Restoring mutual confidence and creating win-win cooperation between the two nations—both essential members of international forums such as the G20, SCO, and BRICS—is reflected in Jaishankar’s comments.
