Defence Minister Aims to Make Own Jet Engines in 5 Years.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced today that the government intends to manufacture high-end systems like as aviation engines and gas turbines in India within the next five years.

Though the MoD did not go into detail about the engines, it had previously announced a joint venture between French engine maker Safran and public sector undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to produce engines for fighter jets. Indian warships use General Electric LM2500 engines. HAL has established an assembly line in India, while GE has announced an extension of its supply chain to include components sourced from Indian enterprises.
