DRDO-Adani Defense Creates Precision Guided Munition (PGM) with Extended Range

In partnership with Adani Defence, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) created the cutting-edge missile system known as the ULM-ER (UAV Launched Missile – Extended Range). This missile is intended to increase the operational capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in combat situations and is a major improvement over its predecessor, the UAV-Launched Precision Guided Munition (ULPGM). The Aero India 2025 show, which took place in Bangalore from February 10–14, 2025, featured this model.

With its unmanned aerial applications design, the ULM-ER improves India’s precision UAV strike capabilities. Adani officials stated that they are getting ready for the ULM-ER’s initial trials, which are anticipated to begin in the middle of 2025.

Compared to the ULPGM’s range of 4 kilometers during the day and 2.5 kilometers at night, the ULM-ER is anticipated to reach a maximum range of over 10 kilometers, which is a significant improvement. The safety of the launching UAVs is improved by the longer standoff distances made possible by this increased range.

The missile’s dual-thrust solid propulsion unit powers its fire-and-forget mechanism. Its imaging infrared (IR) seeker and passive homing system allow for efficient targeting during daytime and nighttime operations. The missile can engage both stationary and moving targets with high precision thanks to its accuracy of about 10 cm.

Because of its complete autonomy, the ULM-ER can carry out missions without constant human assistance. This feature is especially helpful in intricate settings where real-time Control could be difficult. A two-way datalink facilitates communication, enabling updates and, if required, retargeting.
Multiple warhead types can be fitted to the missile, allowing it to successfully engage a variety of targets, such as armored targets, bunkers, and soft-skinned vehicles. Its adaptability makes it more useful in a variety of combat situations.

India’s strategic focus on improving its defense capabilities and technology, especially in light of regional security dynamics, is in line with the development of the ULM-ER.

In keeping with the larger objective of self-reliance in national security, this specific development is a part of a larger effort to modernize India’s defense systems and make sure they are outfitted with state-of-the-art technology. It also demonstrates India’s dedication to developing its own defense technologies and lowering dependency on foreign systems.
