Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Businesses (MSMEs) in India are expected to be greatly impacted by the opening of the C-295 aircraft production facility in Vadodara, which is a joint venture between TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus. With the facility, 18,000 airplane parts will be produced domestically, giving MSMEs a plethora of chances to participate in the supply chain. In addition to strengthening the domestic manufacturing base, this local sourcing will lessen reliance on imports.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that thousands of jobs are anticipated to be created by initiatives like the C-295 facility. MSMEs will also help create jobs in allied industries as they take part in the production process.
A trained workforce will be required for the construction of this facility, which will result in more training and development opportunities for local talent. MSMEs will be empowered by this emphasis on skill development since it will give them the cutting-edge technical skills required for aerospace production.
The C-295 program has already engaged 37 Indian suppliers and certified various specialized processes thus strengthening local supply chains. This development fosters a robust local supply chain, allowing MSMEs to thrive as they become integral parts of the defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The establishment of this facility will necessitate the development of specialised infrastructure, including hangars and maintenance facilities. A Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub for the C-295 aircraft is also planned, which will further integrate MSMEs into the defence supply chain by providing ongoing support
The ‘Make in India’ campaign, which aims to strengthen domestic capabilities and lessen reliance on imports, is in line with the C-295 industrial cluster. The project is anticipated to boost exports and help India become more defense-self-sufficient by encouraging domestic production. The involvement of MSMEs in this ecosystem is critical as it diversifies the supply chain and reduces reliance on foreign suppliers.
Airbus is committed to fulfilling its offset obligations by sourcing products and services from Indian suppliers, which includes many MSMEs. This strategy not only boosts local industries but also enhances their competitiveness on a global scale.
