Iran claimed in a letter to the UN that it will not hesitate to use its inherent right to self-defense when necessary after attacking Israel with drone strikes late on Saturday. It also stated that if Israel engages in military aggression once more, Iran’s response will be “stronger” and “more resolute.”

The Iranian Permanent Mission to the UN verified that the attack was a reaction to Israel’s ongoing military aggressions, specifically its armed assault against Iranian diplomatic facilities on April 1 that resulted in the deaths of seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), three of whom were senior generals.

Article 51 of the United Nations Charter states that Iran has an inherent right to self-defense, which was exercised in this case.

“Regrettably, the United Nations Security Council has failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security, allowing the Israeli regime to transgress red lines and violate the fundamental principles of international law,” the letter stated.

Iran emphasised that these actions have raised regional tensions and put regional and global peace and security at risk.

“As a responsible Member of the United Nations, the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, and international law, and reiterates its consistent position that it does not seek escalation or conflict in the region,” Tehran stated.

It also restated its steadfast commitment to protecting its citizens, national security, and territorial integrity from assault.

“While warning about any further military provocations by the Israeli regime, the Islamic Republic of Iran reaffirms its unwavering determination to defend its people, national security and interests, sovereignty, and territorial integrity against any threat or acts of aggression and to respond to any such threat or aggressions vigorously and in accordance with international law,” it stated.

“When necessary, the Islamic Republic of Iran will not think twice to use its inalienable right to self-defense. Iran’s response to any future military attack by the Israeli state will undoubtedly be more forceful and determined, the message emphasised.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to respond both offensively and defensively after Iran conducted drone and missile assaults on Israel, claiming that Israel has been preparing for a

But after the incident, Israel asked the UNSC to schedule an emergency meeting so that it could categorically denounce Iran and list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.

Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, wrote to the president of the UN Security Council, “I confirm Israel’s request to convene a meeting of the Security Council immediately to unequivocally condemn Iran for these grave violations and to immediately act to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organisation.”

On the other hand, Israel requested that the UNSC conduct an urgent meeting in order to categorically denounce Iran and list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, soon after the incident.
