India Applauds the Hamas-Israel Ceasefire Accord

The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, which includes provisions for the release of hostages, has been formally welcomed by India. President Joe Biden of the United States and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani of Qatar announced the agreement, which would go into force on January 19, 2025, and endure for 42 days. This ceasefire comes after more than 460 days of fierce fighting that has had a serious negative impact on Gaza and claimed many lives on both sides.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that it hoped the truce would allow for a secure and ongoing flow of aid to Gaza’s residents. They underlined the necessity of a return to communication and diplomacy in order to address the ongoing issue and restated appeals for the release of all captives in their statement.

A crucial step in improving the humanitarian situation in the area is the ceasefire deal, which calls for the partial departure of Israeli forces from Gaza and the gradual release of hostages. According to reports, 33 Israeli hostages will be released during this first phase in return for a sizable number of Palestinian detainees.

India’s answer demonstrates its nuanced diplomatic stance; after Hamas’ strikes, it first backed Israel.
