Supporting Indian start-ups that are creating dual-use technologies—those that can be used in both the civilian and defence sectors—as they look to join the US market is the goal of the I2A (India to America) Launchpad program. This program is a component of a larger initiative to improve defence and technology cooperation between the United States and India, especially in view of changing security challenges.
The I2A Launchpad, which was introduced in January 2025, links US defence organisations with Indian technology entrepreneurs to foster collaborations that may result in joint ventures. EtherealX and BonV Aero are two prominent participants in this initiative. Bangalore-based EtherealX is concentrated on creating reusable medium-lift rockets, while Bhubaneswar-based BonV Aero concentrates in cutting-edge unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) built for usage in harsh conditions.
The goal of BonV Aero is to solve the logistical issues that the Indian military faces, especially in high-altitude areas like the Himalayas. Their unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are built to move cargo on their own without the assistance of pilots or a lot of ground backup. An important move for Indian UAV producers, the company is pursuing certification under US programs like Green UAS and Blue UAS, which verify drones for cybersecurity and compliance.
In contrast, EtherealX is developing rocket technology that enables efficient operation in a range of air conditions and allows for reusability. Manu Nair, the CEO of the firm, hopes that their rockets will be able to deliver goods quickly on Earth and travel between planets. EtherealX hopes to take advantage of investment prospects in the US space sector by joining the I2A Launchpad.
The program, a partnership between FedTech and IndusBridge Ventures, offers both organisations training and mentorship from U.S. specialists. This program supports the larger objectives of the India-United States Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X), which was established in 2023 to promote collaborations among defence firms and support technical advancement.
All things considered, the I2A Launchpad is an important step in strengthening the defence industry capabilities of Indian start-ups and encouraging cooperation between two countries dedicated to advancing security via technology.
