Javed Munshi, a Pakistan-trained terrorist, was captured in West Bengal close to the Indo-Bangladesh border.

A joint squad of the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) and the Jammu and Kashmir Police captured Pakistan-trained terrorist Javed Munshi in Canning, South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, close to the Indo-Bangladesh border. He was allegedly preparing to enter Bangladesh under the guidance of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists when he was arrested on December 21, 2024.

Munshi is thought to have ties to the terrorist group Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM), which is prohibited. He has a history of engagement in terrorism-related activities, including prior convictions for terror-related acts and claimed recruitment operations directed at local adolescents. He is notably wanted for his suspected involvement in the 2011 assassination of Ahl-i-Hadith sect leader Shaukat Shah.

Munshi acknowledged using fictitious passports to travel to Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan on several occasions during his initial interrogation. His possession of jihadi literature was discovered by authorities, demonstrating his involvement in the spread of extremist ideas.

Police are looking into whether Munshi was trying to set up a network of sleeper cells in West Bengal. Additionally, they are looking into his contacts in the neighborhood and any possible recruitment efforts he might have carried out. Examining a river path that Munshi regularly utilize to enter Bangladesh is part of the inquiry.

After being arrested, Munshi was placed under transit detention until December 31 so that he could be sent to Kashmir by Jammu and Kashmir Police for additional interrogation. This operation demonstrates how law enforcement is continuously working to address security threats along India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
