Modi informs lawmakers that on May 9, India’s air defense system stopped 1,000 drone attacks from Pakistan.

In a coordinated aerial strike known as Operation Sindoor, Pakistan fired 1,000 drones and missiles, which India’s air defense systems intercepted and destroyed on May 9, 2025, marking a significant milestone. Speaking at an extraordinary session of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “a massive but failed provocation.”

He gave India’s air defense operation credit for successfully destroying every projectile before it could do any harm. Modi highlighted the scope and velocity of the attempted attack, pointing up that the drones, which included Byker YIHA-III Kamikaze models sourced from Turkey, mostly targeted Amritsar, Punjab, civilian areas.

Indian intelligence claims that this assault was a component of a larger plan to flood and overrun Indian airspace with cruise missiles and swift, low-flying drones.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of India’s domestic defense technology in the country’s strong response, citing the effectiveness of drones, missiles, and radar systems made in India.

He emphasized the achievements of the “Make in India” campaign, stating that the efficiency of the air defense and the quick deployment during Operation Sindoor depended heavily on locally made weapons. Modi said that the response should be a source of pride for the country and praised the Indian defense forces for their alertness, expertise, and resolve in defending it.

Following the attack, Pakistan claimed that the Adampur Air Force Base and the S-400 air defense system stationed there had been destroyed by its offensive.

In a show of transparency and assurance, Prime Minister Modi openly denied these claims in his parliamentary speech, stating that he had visited Adampur Air Force Base in person on May 13. One of the pictures he posted from his visit showed Modi saluting as the S-400 system was clearly visible and in use in the backdrop, further refuting Pakistan’s assertions of victory.

In addition to showcasing India’s air defenses’ increased capabilities and preparedness, Operation Sindoor and its aftermath bolstered trust in the country’s domestic defense production industry and the military’s operational tenacity.
