On July 1, the US will host a meeting of its four foreign ministers: State Department

On July 1, 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will welcome his counterparts from Australia, India, and Japan to Washington, DC, for the next QUAD Foreign Ministers Meeting.

This meeting is a component of continuous efforts to fortify the QUAD partnership, a strategic alliance aimed at guaranteeing an Indo-Pacific region that is free, open, and secure. Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott formally announced the meeting, highlighting that it builds on the momentum from past QUAD engagements and demonstrates U.S. leadership in promoting prosperity, peace, and strength in the region.

Originating from cooperative efforts in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the QUAD—which consists of the US, Australia, India, and Japan—has developed into a significant diplomatic alliance addressing regional security, economic opportunity, and technological cooperation.

These priorities will be the main focus of the next meeting, especially in view of recent geopolitical events and worries about China’s expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific.

In addition to discussing more general topics like the state of affairs in West Asia, India is anticipated to push for stricter anti-terror policies, particularly in light of the most recent Pahalgam attack.

This meeting is a prelude to the QUAD Leaders’ Summit, which will take place in India later this year and is anticipated to be attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and US President Donald Trump.

The QUAD has remained focused on homeland security, technology, security, and prosperity despite recent setbacks, including disagreements with Japan over defense spending, tensions with Australia over the AUKUS, and tensions between India and the US over Pakistan.

Reaffirming the group’s shared commitment to preserving sovereignty, territorial integrity, and opposing unilateral changes to the status quo through force or coercion, as well as refocusing on Indo-Pacific strategic issues, are the two main goals of the Washington meeting.

During his visit, which takes place just before important trade talks between the two nations, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent India and is anticipated to have bilateral meetings with US officials. The QUAD’s position as a pillar of regional stability and cooperation will be further cemented when the results of the July 1 meeting are used to set the agenda for the next leaders’ summit in New Delhi.
