Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her husband unusual presents that featured Indian handicrafts while he was in Bangkok for the BIMSTEC Summit.
A Dokra Brass Peacock Boat with a Tribal Rider was given as a gift by PM Modi. An outstanding example of traditional metalwork from India, this artifact was created by tribal artisans from Chhattisgarh using the antiquated lost-wax casting technique.
The tribal rider rowing represents harmony between humans and nature, while the peacock-shaped boat represents grace and cultural imagination. Over time, the brass object acquires a deep patina that enhances its vintage appeal and protects India’s tribal culture.
Gold-plated pearl cufflinks with a tiger motif were given to the spouse. These cufflinks, which feature elaborate Meenakari work from Gujarat and Rajasthan, combine tradition with contemporary sophistication. The pearl bead border strikes a balance between strength and elegance, while the tiger motif represents bravery and leadership. They are made of silver and plated in gold, symbolizing wearable history.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also presented Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua with a brass statue of Sarnath Buddha in Dhyan Mudra, and Thailand’s Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana with a brocade silk shawl from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
PM Modi previously attended the BIMSTEC Summit, where he reaffirmed India’s commitment to regional cooperation and praised the adoption of the BIMSTEC Bangkok Vision 2030. Additionally, he met with leaders from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan to talk about improving cross-sector cooperation.
