Rajnath Singh, the union minister of defense, emphasizes the power struggle in the Indian Ocean region.

On January 15, 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the growing importance of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) in the dynamics of global security during the commissioning of three cutting-edge navy vessels: INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer. He pointed out that because of the region’s strategic significance for trade and security, it is increasingly becoming a focus of global power struggles.

Since the Indian Ocean is now a vital route for international trade, its significance has surpassed that of the Atlantic Ocean, according to Defense Minister Singh. Since this area is used for around 95% of India’s trade, its security is crucial for the country’s interests.

The defense minister emphasized that, especially in view of China’s growing naval presence, the IOR is becoming more and more marked by competition among major nations. He emphasized that a strong Indian Navy that can protect India’s maritime interests is essential to this contest.

Singh reiterated India’s dedication to attaining defense self-reliance, which is embodied in the Atmanirbharta idea. He pointed out that more than 75% of the parts in the recently commissioned ships are made in India, demonstrating the country’s expanding defense manufacturing capabilities.

Additionally, the commissioning ceremony represented a breakthrough in India’s larger defense modernization initiatives. According to Singh, the Ministry of Defence has declared 2025 to be the “Year of Reforms” and has a number of programs in place to improve operational preparedness and domestic manufacturing capacity.

Singh drew attention to persistent issues in the area, such as illicit activities like terrorism and drug trafficking, which exacerbate security dynamics. It is believed that a robust naval presence is necessary to successfully fight these threats.

As a result of growing geopolitical tensions in the Indian Ocean Region, Rajnath Singh’s comments highlight India’s strategic shift towards enhancing its naval capabilities. This strategy seeks to protect national interests while encouraging increased independence in the production of defenses.
