Thanking ‘Friend’ Donald Trump for the birthday greetings, PM Modi says he is dedicated to advancing their relationship.

On his 75th birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked US President Donald Trump for his phone call and kind birthday wishes.

Modi called Trump “my friend” and reiterated his shared commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership. Additionally, he stated his support for Trump’s efforts to end the crisis in Ukraine peacefully.

In an effort to further bilateral trade talks, US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch headed a mission to New Delhi on the day of this interaction. Following constructive and optimistic talks, Indian and US officials agreed to step up efforts to conclude a mutually beneficial trade agreement as soon as possible.

Rajesh Agrawal, India’s Special Secretary to the Department of Commerce, participated in the discussions, which centered on resolving issues brought on by the high tariffs on Indian goods in the US.

These discussions take place against the backdrop of the United States’ punitive tariffs, which Trump doubled to 50% in August in retaliation for India’s ongoing imports of Russian oil. A large number of Indian exports were impacted by this tariff rise, endangering jobs and the economy.

The US drive to expose sensitive dairy and agriculture industries has raised concerns in India. By October or November 2025, both parties hope to have the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement finished.

Modi emphasized the strong friendship and organic alliance between the US and India and conveyed optimism over the trade talks’ advancement. In order to ensure a more promising and successful future for both nations, he expressed a desire to have direct conversations with Trump. In a similar vein, the US side emphasized the value of the bilateral relationship and shared goals to proactively address trade impediments.

After a time of stress following tariff hikes, this represents a period of cautious optimism and fresh discussion, with both sides dedicated to advancing trade and strategic partnerships.
