The FADEC engine for the TAPAS UAV is being developed by JAYEM Industries in Coimbatore.

Significant testing has just been completed on the Defence Research and Development Organization’s (DRDO) TAPAS UAV, which is propelled by a brand-new domestic engine from JAYEM Automotives. The engine’s Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system improves operational efficiency and reliability by enabling fully autonomous control without pilot interaction.

The new 2.2L, 4-cylinder inline turbocharged engine can run up to 32,000 feet and generates 180 horsepower at 11,000 feet. Compared to earlier models of the TAPAS UAV, which had trouble reaching greater altitudes, this represents a major improvement.

The new engine’s ground testing has been successfully finished. As part of the UAV’s capabilities development program, flight testing is anticipated to start shortly with the goal of operating at altitudes of 32,000 feet.

Long-endurance surveillance missions are the speciality of the TAPAS UAV, especially in high-altitude regions like the Himalayas. The power and efficiency of the new engine are essential for the longer flying durations required for reconnaissance missions.

In addition to strengthening India’s defence technology independence, this discovery will lessen reliance on imported engines if the next flying tests are successful. In order to improve India’s aerial surveillance capabilities, the TAPAS UAV program is strategically significant.
