On December 21, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a historic two-day visit to Kuwait, the first time an Indian prime minister has visited the Gulf state in forty-three years. At the invitation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the purpose of this visit is to connect with the country’s largest expatriate population, the Indian diaspora in Kuwait, and to improve bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Modi was welcomed with cultural performances by the Indian community upon his visit. He engaged with diaspora members during this event and conveyed his appreciation for their efforts to Kuwait and India. In addition, Modi met with retired Indian Foreign Service officer Mangal Sain Handa, 101, in response to a request posted on social media by Handa’s granddaughter. Modi’s personal interaction with the Indian diaspora overseas was demonstrated by this well-received gesture.
PM Modi’s schedule includes talks with Kuwaiti leadership on a range of subjects, including trade, investment, and energy cooperation, in addition to cultural exchanges. The visit is viewed as a chance to establish new channels of cooperation between Kuwait and India.
