The registration of three specially armoured diesel cars used by the Special Protection Group (SPG), which is in charge of the Prime Minister’s protection, has been extended for a further five years by the Supreme Court of India.
However, after solicitor general Tushar Mehta requested the prolongation, noting the significance of the vehicles, the bench of the high court allowed the relaxation to the SPG.
On December 16, 2024, this decision was taken in response to the SPG’s request to prolong the registration time, which had been contested by a previous National Green Tribunal order that rejected the proposal.
The Supreme Court’s decision permits the cars in question to continue operating uninterrupted for an extra five years, which is important for guaranteeing the safety and security of well-known people.
