The White House rejects Asim Munir, the head of the Pakistan Army, being invited to the US military parade.

Reports that Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, received an invitation to the significant military parade that took place in Washington, D.C., on Saturday have been flatly denied by the White House. “This is not true,” a White House official said categorically. Claims that Munir was invited to the event were flatly denied when it was stated that no foreign military leaders were invited.

The parade was billed as one of the biggest military spectacles in recent US history and was held to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the US Army’s founding on June 14, 1775. Thousands of soldiers, dozens of tanks, military equipment, helicopters, parachutists, and aerial flyovers were all part of the event, which was hosted by President Donald Trump on his 79th birthday.

Since the last similar event was the National Victory Celebration in 1991 after Operation Desert Storm, the US does not have a tradition of such large military parades, so the spectacle was noteworthy.

Opposition parties like the Congress and Shiv Sena-UBT criticized the Modi government and framed the alleged invitation as a diplomatic setback for India after the first reports of Munir’s purported invitation caused a great deal of political controversy in India.

Despite the lack of official confirmation from US authorities, the story was widely reported by some Indian media outlets, who interpreted it as a diplomatic victory for Pakistan and a slight to India. Attempts to frame the incident as a diplomatic setback for India or a win for Pakistan were essentially stifled by the White House’s prompt denial, which revealed the reports to be baseless.

Because both Indian and Pakistani political actors tried to use the false reports for their own domestic ends, the episode also highlighted the perils of disinformation in international relations. In actuality, the event was entirely American, with no foreign military representation, and was centered on commemorating the US Army’s historic milestone and demonstrating the country’s defense capabilities.
