The Navy’s aircraft carrier battleships and frigates, as well as the Air Force’s TEJAS MK-1 light combat aircraft and helicopters, are powered by defensive engines and systems manufactured by GE Aerospace.

Mumbai: On Thursday, US aerospace giant GE Aerospace—which just went public on the New York Stock Exchange—announced an investment of USD 30 million (₹240 crores) to renovate and expand its Pune manufacturing site.

The company released a statement stating that the investment will enable the facility to add new projects and manufacturing processes by acquiring machines/equipment and specialised tools in addition to increasing the capacity of current items.

The expansion will increase the Pune plant’s contribution to our global supply chain for aircraft engine components, which it already plays a significant part in. Vice President Mike Kauffman

The Pune facility, which produced parts for commercial jet engines, was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2015. These are provided to GE’s global plants, where they are utilised in the assembly of the G90, GEnx, GE 9X (the most powerful commercial jet engine in the world), and the LEAP engines produced by CFM, a joint venture between GE and Safran.

Up to 700 GE and partner engines are currently in use in the nation; GE Aerospace has been a part of it for more than 40 years. The Navy’s aircraft carrier battleships and frigates, as well as the Air Force’s Tejas Mk 1 light combat aircraft and helicopters, are powered by its defence systems and engines.
