In an effort to resolve the ongoing crisis with Russia, U.S. and Ukrainian delegations are presently negotiating in Saudi Arabia.
The talks, which centre on safeguarding vital locations and energy infrastructure in the face of ongoing conflict, were confirmed by Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.
These discussions are a part of a larger diplomatic effort to create a framework for regional peace that is being spearheaded by former US President Donald Trump.
Umerov said the talks were fruitful and concentrated on important topics, like as energy security, and underlined Ukraine’s dedication to attaining a “just peace” and bolstering national security.
He emphasised that the goal is in line with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s orders to strengthen security while promoting peace.
Although he recognised the difficulties, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff voiced cautious optimism about the negotiations, speculating that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be amenable to peace.
Despite continuing military operations, the US and Russian delegations are planning to meet separately in Riyadh, suggesting an attempt to find common ground.
These talks are taking place right before planned discussions with Russian and Ukrainian delegates, which makes their timing crucial. Zelenskyy has urged Western allies to put more pressure on Moscow, especially in the wake of recent Russian drone attacks that killed civilians in Kyiv and other areas. He called for sincere attempts to stop the bombardments and emphasised that Russia is extending the war.
Attacks have not stopped despite the continuous talks since both parties have put forth different ideas for short-term ceasefires. The Kremlin has toned down hopes for a speedy conclusion, saying that talks are still in their infancy and would probably encounter many obstacles in the future.
