Significant gold and silver seizures of more over ₹13,000 crores have been reported by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the India-Bangladesh border in 2024. This statistic shows a significant rise in smuggling, especially since the BSF has stepped up its efforts to combat these illegal enterprises.
The BSF South Bengal Frontier alone confiscated 159 kilogram of silver worth around ₹1.15 crore and 170.48 kg of gold worth about ₹118.63 crore between January and November 2024. Over ₹13,000 crore is said to have been seized in total across the border, suggesting a larger pattern of smuggling in the area.
The BSF has demonstrated their dedication to dismantling smuggling networks by apprehending 32 smugglers from Bangladesh and 86 smugglers from India who were participating in these operations.
To avoid discovery, smugglers have used a variety of strategies, such as concealing valuable metals in shoe soles, car cavities, or even turning them into paste. However, watchful BSF men have resisted these tactics.
