Bangladesh Brings Up ‘Concern’ About Border Fencing With Indian High Commissioner

In order to convey its “deep concern” about recent border fencing measures by India’s Border Security Force (BSF), Bangladesh has called Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma. This diplomatic action comes in response to Dhaka’s accusations that India tried to erect barbed wire fences at five points along the border between India and Bangladesh, acts that Bangladesh says are against current bilateral accords.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin expressed these worries during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, stressing that these “unauthorised” activities had increased border tensions and unrest. He pleaded with India to avoid taking any “provocative actions” that would worsen the situation.

High Commissioner Verma responded by restating India’s resolve to uphold a safe and cooperative border management approach. Regarding border fencing intended to prevent crime and smuggling, he noted that both nations have previous agreements. Uddin, however, emphasized that building fences without the required permission erodes the spirit of collaboration between the two countries and demanded immediate action in response to recent border killings that have included Bangladeshi nationals.

During the roughly 45-minute conversation, all parties talked about the significance of the next high-level negotiations between the BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in February as well as the necessity of adhering to earlier agreements.
