On February 5, 2025, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis landed in India for a five-day official visit with the goal of enhancing strategic and diplomatic relations between Greece and India. Since both countries have historically maintained cooperative relations, especially in supporting one another on important international issues like Kashmir and Cyprus, this visit is significant.
Gerapetritis is expected to meet with S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, during his visit. The two men are expected to discuss a range of topics related to bilateral cooperation, such as security and economic cooperation. He will also speak with Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor. One of the visit’s highlights was when Gerapetritis gave the keynote address at an event hosted by the Observer Research Foundation that examined the Greece-India partnership in the context of contemporary geopolitics.
With ongoing projects like the building of a new airport in Kasteli, Crete, spearheaded by Indian infrastructure company GMR Airports Ltd., which represents a sizable investment from India into Greece, the visit coincides with efforts by both nations to strengthen their strategic partnership. Closer ties between the two countries are also facilitated by the expanding Indian community in Greece, which is currently estimated to number between 13,000 and 14,000 people, mostly of Punjabi descent.
